Chapter 29

Mal

Wednesday

Jimmy paced the cramped hotel room, alternating between staring at Mal with his mouth ajar and avoiding the sight of her.

“Whatever you have to say, just say it,” she said.

“Explain to me again how any of this makes sense to you.”

She rolled her eyes. “I told you. I want to talk to Ella. We make one more stop. Then it’s over, and we’re off to the Caribbean. I promise.”

“And you couldn’t have talked to her before this job? Met for coffee or something, like an adult?”

“It’s too late for that now. I need to go back at the beginning before we leave for good.”

“I’ve mentioned that I think you’re being ridiculous, right? Every time we go out in public, we risk being caught. And don't get me started about the stupidity of starting a bar fight."

"I did not start that!" She clenched her fists at her sides.

"The point is, I know you're smarter than this. Do you want to end up like Bri?” He paused, and Mal’s stomach turned at the reminder of Bri’s death. Jimmy kept going.

“You’re being reckless again. You suddenly need a heart-to-heart with your sister? For what? We need to cut our losses and leave the country while we can.”

“One more stop, I swear. Just like you insisted we do one more job.”

He stared at her in disbelief for a few seconds before reacting, his voice louder with every word. “That was for a ton of money. This is for… nothing. Your entertainment. Or closure. Or whatever it is.” He tone was mocking.

Her face clouded over. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“You’re right, I don’t,” said Jimmy. “But do whatever you want, because I’m done. Make as many stupid choices as you’d like. I’m leaving the country tonight, with or without you.”

Mal sputtered. “You’re what?”

“You heard me. If you want to get arrested, go ahead. If you make it to the Caribbean, you’re welcome to join me. But don’t bring any feds with you this time.”

Mal’s face hardened into a scowl. “You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, but I would, darling. You may be sentimental, but I’m not.”

Her voice took on the same hostile tone she’d once used with Ella. “Fine then. Go. I don’t need you.”

Jimmy shook his head and tried one more time. “Mallory, she’s not worth it. I don’t know your history, but I know we’re pushing our luck every moment we stay here. Stop sabotaging yourself.”

“Very fucking deep for a thief, aren’t you?”

What little sympathy he’d had for her dissipated, and he made one last sweep around the hotel room to grab the suitcase he’d packed earlier. He strode to the door, pausing before opening it.

“Good luck, Mallory. I hope you accomplish whatever it is you’re hoping to get out of this.” Holding the door open with his foot, he wiped both handles with a washcloth, tossed it back inside the room, and left without a backwards glance.

Mal watched Jimmy’s retreat, stone-faced. When the door closed behind him, she let out a shriek and picked up a large, glass paperweight from the desk.
